May & June 2009

Our cricketers have made a very impressive start to the season and for the first time ever all 5 senior mens teams won on the same day one Saturday. This and a number of centuries (Hemish, Morgs) and fifties are severely affecting the Chairman’s bank balance as he forks out for jug after jug. Also, the sun shines, the birds sing merrily and at function after function, the tills ring even more merrily. So is the Chairman happy? Not a chance. He is still moaning about the unfinished bits of the pav that the members could do – small jobs that would make all the difference between a pav that merely works and one that is the nuts.

The turf put down by the cricketers in front of the pavilion (“well done, for once!” the Chairman croaks) is taking well and the Wyon roses in the terrace border are flowering and inside the pavilion flower new notice boards and quiz machines and barkeepers who actually seem to enjoy doing it. But the May “to do” list remains undone, so the Chairman is still grumpy. Click here to see the list of outstanding tasks...

However, on June 8th 2009 a momentous event occurred; the resident tramp has been evicted (“Shall we dump him in the skip for hazardous waste?” suggest Nick Wright) and the old pav IS NO MORE. Without drama or emotion the monster in the attached pictures (the machine, not the tramp) took about thirty minutes to demolish a building that has served the club well for forty years and that was replete with fond memories. Let us hope that the new pavilion will shortly be full of such happy moments.

The ground on which the old shed (sorry, clubhouse) stood will now be levelled and grassed as far as the side terrace and up to the boundary of the main ground then, as soon as we can afford it, the back cricket ground will be upgraded so that we have two full sized ovals. Do I hear the Chairman mutter that this is likely to happen quicker than the completion of his May “to do” list?

How can I, as an HHTCC member, help we hear you ask?

1. You can take out a debenture, which is a loan to the Club giving you free membership for a number of years, and repayment with interest. Life membership costs £5000, Gold £3500, Silver £2000, Bronze £500. Ask for a brochure if you have not already seen it.2. If you are a tradesman, you can give your labour free during normal working hours in return for a debenture. Call the Chairman to discuss this option on 01442 254842 or 07738 398165.3. If you have any skills at all, or even if you can offer only labour, you can join the Chairman and other members who so far have cleaned up the site, started to clad the players' balcony, painted soffits and fascias etc etc

WITHOUT A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF PHYSICAL AND/OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FROM THE MEMBERSHIP, THE PAVILION WILL NEVER BE FINISHED!
