Social Event News
Posted Aug 2008:
Social events this year have been sadly missing from the calendar. It is significant that the last entry here was for last year's D & D. As a club trying to build a new pavilion, we must do more to run and support social events to boost development funds. Please contact any committee member if you have any ideas or if you want to help organise a social event.
Social Event Reports
Posted Nov 2008: Indian Meal
An evening at the Sitar restaurant in Boxmoor was held on 4th Nov. All attending had a great evening and raised £300 for the club.
An entertaining evening was had by all at the Family Quiz night with all proceeds going to the new Pav fund.
Posted Aug 2008: Disco's
Well done to Ben Dumpleton who has organised a number of successful discos this season, culminating in the Emergency Services event on Bank Holiday weekend Saturday. On this occasion, the club's ENTIRE STOCK of bottled beer and cider was drunk! Dumps has increased bar turnover this season by over £6,000 - a large part of which seems to have been a personal effort! Thanks also to all those who helped out, on the door, with the disco, collecting bottles and glasses, as volunteers behind the bar and clearing up at the end. The Chairman especially wishes to thank Alex Coleman, who stuck it out behind the bar the whole evening and even told the Chairman to go and have a break - A FIRST!
Posted Jul 2008: Family Day
Unfortunately, after a rainy start on Bank Holiday Sunday, the Family Day was not well supported and even the famous canal duck race had to be abandoned. Nevertheless a few die hards enjoyed the barbecue and a rounders match where the Chairman's classy dive into second base followed by continental-type histrionics narrowly failed to gain the Oscar it deserved.
Posted May 2008: Quiz Night
The Womens Team organised a successful Fish & Quiz Night. About 50 members and guests turned out and it was an evening of great entertainment. The bar did very well and so did the ladies.
Posted Feb 2008: Games Night
The Senior Players indulged in (we wont say "organised") a games night at the Club in February. A closely fought match between two select teams competing in darts, computer golf, pool and pitch and putt in the pitch dark outside resulted in a draw when the Chairman beat Tommo in a classically incompetent game of pool (Alex Higgins at his intoxicated worst and cliff Thorburn on LSD spring to mind). This resulted in a bowl out on the artificial track by the light of Giles' headlights - a fitting introduction to the club it was felt for our new strike bowler, Brett Penny. Afterwards, it took a satisfyingly long time to count the bar takings there were hang overs all round the next day by all accounts. A repeat performance is threatened before the season gets under way.
Posted Dec 2007: Annual Dinner & Dance
Despite the clash with the Rugby World Cup Final, the annual Dinner Dance and Presentation in the new function room at the Watermill Hotel, Bourne End was a resounding success. The speakers raced through their lines and the cups were virtually thrown at the winners so that we could get finished before kick-off of the rugby. We just made it after Giles had a frenetic tinker with the machinery to get the projector going and although the result of the match was disappointing, the meal was first class and the service excellent. The Guest of Honour was Mike Penning MP who enjoyed the rugby and we think the meal hugely. During the match he remarked "At least you didn't have to make stilted conversation to some old bore sat next to you" and the Chairman was so replete with good food and wine (mostly the latter) that the significance of this remark did not sink in until his guest had disappeared. Thanks again to the Howards, who did a splendid job of organisation. With luck, next year the event should be held in the new pavilion!
