The Chairman Writes....
I was not a member of the club when the late Bear (Peter Wright) built the present clubhouse. But in my first years at the club I admired the winning team containing his sons Nick and Martin and such stalwarts as Dick Miller and Mike Dale. This was a First Team that won the league and many other trophies. I like winners. It was therefore a huge pleasure to see all these former greats back at the last bash in the old clubhouse and it is peculiarly fitting that, as his contribution to the pavilion development scheme, Nick has offered to demolish the “temporary” building that his dad put up and that has served the club for more than 30 years beyond its design life.
At “The Last Chance Saloon” evening it was also a very pleasant surprise to receive a debenture cheque for £5,000.00. The debenture fund now stands at £33,000.00 and the Roll of Honour includes;
Elizabeth & George Ahye
Catherine Appleby
James Axford
Geof Ball
Paul Boggis
Stella Frogley
Robert Lane
Anthony Lynch
Michael Newsum
Colin Nunn
John & Teresa Smith
Roger Stephens
Abaan Suqlain
Paul Thompson
Dudley Warnford
Norman Waterton
I hope that the senior cricketers who will be the main beneficiaries, but who are noticeably absent from the above list, are very grateful to these other members, as I am. But we are some way off our original target of £45,000.00.
Do not be fooled because everyone is jumping for joy that the new pavilion is about to open. The building scheme is far from complete. We have already axed the solar panelling for lack of funds and we cannot afford the front terrace. Indeed we may only manage to get the pavilion in a passable state to open for the season thanks to a generous short term loan from The Boxmoor Trust to cover cashflow problems. But, this will mean that we fall £13,500.00 short of the build costs unless we get in some extra contributions. Please remember that you can join the Roll of Honour for as little as £500 (payable in instalments if necessary). You get a waiver on subs and when you get your debenture paid back by the club you get a bonus of 20%. What bank will pay that in the foreseeable future? It is still not too late to contribute !
